How do I make a seating chart, and keep some pupils apart?
Choose a layout (rows, pairs, group tables or horseshoe), then Shuffle seats or Fill in list order. Add pairs to Keep apart and the shuffle keeps them out of neighbouring seats.
Step by step
- Open the seating chart maker and choose your class list.
- Choose a Layout: Rows of single desks, Rows of pairs, Group tables or Horseshoe (U shape), and set the numbers of desks or tables.
- Press Fill in list order or Shuffle seats.
- Open Keep apart (optional) and add one pair per line, such as “Ben + Hugo”, then shuffle again.
- To swap two pupils, tap one seat and then the other (or drag on a computer). Press Esc to cancel.
- Choose where the front of class is, then press Print.
Questions and fixes
It says there are more names than seats
Add desks or tables until there are enough seats, or remove names who aren’t in this lesson.
It says it could not keep every pair apart
With a crowded layout some pairs may have to sit near each other. Add seats, change the layout, or swap the remaining pairs by hand.
My work has gone, or isn’t there on another computer
Your seating charts is saved in this browser on this device only – nothing is stored with us, so we can’t get it back for you. It won’t appear in a different browser, on another device, or in a private (incognito) window, and clearing your browser’s history or “site data” deletes it. Some school computers clear everything when you log off.
