How do I make a school trip risk assessment?

Open the Risk Assessment Maker, pick a starter template (day trip, residential, water, forest school, science, D&T, PE or sports day), then edit the hazards, controls and risk ratings. It saves in this browser and downloads as Word or PDF.

Step by step

  1. Open the Risk Assessment Maker.
  2. Choose a Starter template closest to your activity. Starter templates are starting points only: check every line against your visit.
  3. Give it a title, then add, edit or remove hazards with + Add a hazard. Rate each risk before and after your controls.
  4. Fill in emergency contacts by role (+ Add a contact), first aid and sign-off.
  5. Find it again in My risk assessments, where you can Duplicate or Delete.
  6. Press Print, PDF, Word (.docx) or Copy for Google Docs, and send it to your EVC or head teacher for approval.

My work has gone, or isn’t there on another computer

Your risk assessments is saved in this browser on this device only – nothing is stored with us, so we can’t get it back for you. It won’t appear in a different browser, on another device, or in a private (incognito) window, and clearing your browser’s history or “site data” deletes it. Some school computers clear everything when you log off.

It says it could not save

Storage is full or blocked in this browser. Press Download backup now, so you don’t lose your work, then try a normal (not private) window.

Is the template enough on its own?

No. Templates list common hazards, but only you know your venue, group and pupils’ needs. Follow your school’s and local authority’s visits policy.
